Waldy and I just returned from an amazing 10 day self tour of Iceland.  Our route in green on the map, travelling counter clockwise from Reykjavik. We rented a car, had our hotels booked every nite and drove around the whole island in 10 days. It was fantastic. Iceland is such a beautiful country with its mountains, lava fields, grass pastures, water falls, sheep, puffins, and not many trees. The weather was a bit rainy and foggy the 1st two days, then it cleared up for us the rest of the trip. We visited the famous Blue Lagoon but decided not to go in as the line ups were too long.

They say there are 3 times as many sheep as people on the island and there are 300,000 people, so that is a lot of sheep. They roam all over the island and in the fall, they round them up. Most we saw were groups of a yew with 2 young ones. The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse developed in Iceland. Although the horses are small, at times pony-sized, most registries for the Icelandic refer to it as a horse. Icelandic horses are long-lived and hardy. In their native country they have few diseases; Icelandic law prevents horses from being imported into the country and exported animals are not allowed to return.

There are many water falls and we managed to see a few of them – quite spectacular. The main highway (1) is quite narrow but manageable with the small Nissan Micra we had. There are also many hot springs and steam escaping from the ground. They do not have to heat their water, it is piped all over the island and may only lose up to 3 degrees in transit. In some places the hot water has a strong sulfur smell, but is is very soft and quite soothing. The cold spring water is really good to drink.

I intended to just show you a few of our photos but you may as well have a seat as there are quite a few 🙂 I didn’t name everything as the names wouldn’t mean anything to you. The photos are not in numerical order.
