On occasion we see Yellow Bellied Marmots. They get into a lot of mischief. In 2021 we’ve had one living here since July. It’s odd to see only one as they usually live in groups. He co-exists with the GHOs and they don’t appear to bother one another. He/she left in September to hibernate. 2025: Hector or Hectorine is now spending his/her 4th summer with us having hibernated underneath our living room window now for 3 winters. Feel free to comment below the slide shows.
2025: April 1, Hector graced us with his presence. He took very little time finding his way back to our quonset, digging his hole to get in and out. Every day he comes out to feed and spends mornings and evening eating grass. One morning the Canada Geese were in his way on ‘his’ grass so he jumped towards them and scared them away. Usually Hector starts collecting grass for his den just before he goes into hibernation but his summer he has been doing it all along.
2024: Hector came out of hibermation on March 26. There were footsteps in the snow but we did not see him till March 28. He went back into hibernation in late August.
2023: Hector came out of hybernation today (April 3). Not a great day as it’s cloudy and snowing. He had some grass, not much new stuff yet. He went back into his burrow after about 1/2 hour. July 11: Hector has been with us all summer. He is not afraid of us, doesn’t run away when we get close to him/her?? He’s gotten a little chubbier after eating our grass and dandelions. October 30: We were entertained by Hector all summer. He hybernated in the same place as last autumn but a month earlier.
Previous Marmots
2022:The Marmot returned in April then suddenly disappeared. Did he leave to find a mate? Did she go into a den to have little ones? or was she/he another critter’s supper? Did you know they climb trees?
2022b: We have a new marmot, our friends gave him a name, Hector. This one is a bit younger than our other. He is less afraid of us and has been all around the property, including helping him/herself to some lettuce till we chased him/her away. On Sept 14, Hector went into hibernation under our living room window.
