This past week, we have seen 3 new bird species. A Turkey Vulture and a Long-eared Owl. We are just on the northern border line of the Vulture’s range. The Long-eared Owl lives in our range but as we have 2 resident Great Horned Owls, it probably doesn’t like to come here. Our GH chicks are growing fast. The Swainson’s Hawks rebuilt their nest in last year’s location. Every day we see the Meadowlark in our tree serenading us. We still have lots of ducks. We saw an American Bittern (1st ever) and Moose at Police Outpost Provincial Park. Our friends went to the Calgary Zoo so I had to add their Panda Photo!! My sister who lives in Prince Edward County, Ontario sent the Oriole and Hummingbird Photos.

That Long-Eared owl made me smile. Wonder if he/she likes those long ears! Well seems he wasn’t given a choice.

Every day at Marlene & Waldy’s home we saw the Meadowlark singing beautifully. I haven’t seen one in Ontario since the 90s. And those beautiful owl chicks!! Lots of ducks. At home we see the Turkey Vultures at the beaches feeding on dead fish or other birds.
Hi Marlene, we don’t have all the birds that you do but you we are getting some that I haven’t seen for decades and another that I’ve never seen. You mentioned the Orioles that Viviane has, about 2 weeks ago a male showed up at our feeders and now there are 3 pairs. I haven’t seen them since I was in my early teens and they were nesting in our backyard. There is a pair of Rose Breasted Grossbeaks that seem to have tagged along with the Orioles and share some of the food. They have been here before but never stayed, hoping this year that they will. The Catbird is the one I’ve never seen or heard of, so far it is alone. The Goldfinches never left us and now their colors are very bright. 10th of May the hummingbirds came back and the first one must have been freezing her tail feathers off. It has been and is still too cool for this time of the year, only 10degC now and the temps are dropping for the night. So much so that I have to bring my Orange tree in for the night. It is getting kind of heavy to move around but I’ve had it for over 20 years and just don’t want to let it go, besides the blossoms smell really nice and bears many oranges.
